Skiathos Itinerary Info

Most developed among the Sporades, the mountainous island of Skiathos is densely forested, and appears unusually green for the climate of the region. Although it has an area of only 49 square kilometres, the island boasts an impressive 62 beaches.

The meaning of Panormos is “all bay” because it is sheltered in every direction. It's genuinely hard to detect the passageway to the bay because of it being parallel with the base ofDhasis Island. The town on the coast of the bay lies on an ancient site and some of the ruins still remain on the beach.

Patitiri is the largest village on the island of Alonnisos as well as the largest port. Until the earthquake of 1965, it was a small harbor serving the town of Palia, which became uninhabitable and the residents moved down the hill. The harbor provides great shelter from the prevailing strong Meltemi wind.

This little island isone of the numerous uninhabited islands in the group, and the only residents are a few monks that live in the small monastery on the east side of the island. The island is a NMPANS registered nature reserve home to the Mediterranean Monk Seal.

Skopelos is the biggest of the four primary islands in the Sporades. It's larger than both Mykonos and Santorini. The closest occupied islands are Alonissos toward the east and Skiathos toward the west. Because of countless springs, the island is covered with plum, orange and almond orchards and olive groves. The island has also been famous for its wines since ancient times.

Koukounaries is a vast sandy bay that is located on the southwestern tip of Skiathos. A forest separates the beach from the lagoon that lies behind it. The lagoon connects to the small harbor to the east of the beach by a river, and can be explored by dinghy.

Skiathos town is the main settlement of the island. A large portion of the town is comprised of whitewashed houses and cobblestone alleys. Unlike other Greek islands, there are only a few ancient remains around town. The waterfront of the town is busy, filled with lots of tavernas, bars and restaurants, and you may chance upon an occasional open air concert.
